Also called as the dental surgeon a dentist or an orthodontist is a health care practitioner who diagnoses, prevents and treats the diseases which are related with the conditions of the oral cavity. In all this a dentist is not all alone as he is supported by an able staff who are also called as the dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians and the dental therapists. A dentist is supposed to carry out a list of dental treatments such as dental restorations, crowns and the bridges. Apart from them the braces, prosthetic and the endodontic therapies apart from performing the examinations such as taking the radiographs and the diagnosis of the diseases … all fall within the purview of the dentist.

Moreover the dentist is allowed to engage in the surgery of the orifice when performing the invasive procedures such as the dental implant placements and other associated procedures. Apart from these the dentist has the authority and the practicing knowledge of prescribing the medications such as the antibiotics, fluorides, pain killers, sedatives and other forms of hypnotics which could be beneficial in the treatment of the various conditions that could take place in the head and the neck.

In order to carry out the additional medical procedures such as the General anesthesia, oral and the maxillofacial surgery and the implants the dentist has to take up the study in order to have the additional qualifications. Here it should be remembered that the poor conditions in the oral cavity can and will lead to very poor general health conditions. Poor orifice conditions can be indicative of life threatening diseases such as the diabetes, osteoporosis and sometimes AIDS.

In order to be a dentist, so far as the USA or the North American continent is concerned, a dentist has to be a graduate from the high school with the subjects such as biology, general chemistry and the organic chemistry. Although most of the dental schools require at least a bachelor degree, some of the schools may consider can admit exceptional students after just three years of college.

A newly graduated dentist is given the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or the Doctor of Dental Medicine all depending on the school that they have attended. A dentist who is freshly graduated can pursue further specialization in the form of specialty residency training ranging from 2 to 6 years. Moreover the dentist continue with the education where they attend lectures to learn of the recent developments, practice new methods and earn more knowledge in order to enhance their reputation and the skills.
